The “Glass House” Secures a Permanent Home
The ‘Glass House’ by artist and sculptor, Michael Magyar, is a 7-foot-tall glass obelisk that pays homage to the history of glass in Sandwich. It is a solar-powered display featuring four glass panels. The design combines bits of glass from the Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. that operated on Jarves Street from 1825 to 1888, and contemporary glass sourced from glass artists worldwide.
The original location was at the Historic Town Hall campus next to the Dexter Grist Mill. The Glass Town Cultural District Steering Committee obtained permission from the Sandwich Historic District Committee to place it there for three years. It now sits at the Sandwich Public Library at its permanent home, 145 Main St. We thank the Massachusetts Cultural Council for their generous grants that made this beautiful monument to Sandwich’s past possible.

Light Up the Town
One of our key initiatives of the Glass Town Cultural District Steering Committee is the “Light Up the Town” project that was initiated in December 2023 for the holiday season. The “Light Up the Town” project includes lighting up the village again in the 2024-2025 holiday season and the Summer of 2024 and beyond. Imagine strolling down the tree-lined streets adorned with twinkling lights, casting a warm glow over quaint shops, restaurants, and charming cafes in summer. Make a donation for this exciting project here.
